About Ms. King
My name is Kristin King.  I have been teaching English to Jr. High School students for about 10 years.  This is my 2nd year at Highland Park Junior High.
I grew up in a family full of English teachers.  This means that there was nothing unusual about someone pulling out a reference book in the middle of a holiday dinner.  We discussed books over every meal.  Despite that, or maybe because of that, when I was a teenager, I hated to read.
Still, I knew I wanted to be a teacher at an early age.  The custodian at my elementary school used to call me "Teach".  Embarrassing, but true.  By the time I set off for college, I decided that teaching was not for me.  I considered medicine and I considered advertising.  However, during my first meeting with my college advisor, he said to me "so you're going to teach."
"No," I told him, "I'm the one whose not going to teach".
He just stared at me and said, "You're going to teach. Would you like elementary or secondary?"  At the moment, I realized that was kidding no one.  I was born to teach.
Though most of my family teaches High School, I found my niche in Jr. High.  I enjoy the challenge of teaching kids HOW to learn rather than just expecting them to do it.  I make it my personal mission to help every student who is willing to learn (and even a few who aren't!)
I am very open to working with parents and students to make this the best year possible for everyone!

I have three basic expectations for all of my students:
  1. Come prepared to learn (bring materials, leave the gossip at the door).
  2. Be respectful of all (like it or not a class is a team...and we will succeed or fail based on the effort of each person in the classroom).
  3. Follow the school rules--all by yourself  (keep the focus on learning, not behavior)

I can reached by email at kristin.king@spps.org.  Students are welcome to email me with questions or to send me drafts of assignments to look over.  Parents are welcome to ask questions or voice concerns.  Please know that many emails get caught in my Spamjam (junk mail filters) and it takes an extra day for them to come through.  It helps if you use your student's name in the subject line.

Students are also able to share documents with me through Google Apps.  Documents should be shared with my Google Apps email address: kristin.king@stpaul.k12.mn.us
