Welcome to Highland Park Jr. High
PICT0002
Highland Park Junior High (HPJH) is an exciting and energetic grade seven and eight school that serves students and families from all over the city.

Here at Highland....
...we follow the middle school philosophy.  We organize students in smaller learning communities called Teams.  Each student on the team shares the same math, science, English and social studies teacher.  Each student meets with their homeroom teacher for thirty minutes each day. The homeroom serves as their mentor and academic counselor and monitors the student's social and emotional growth.  The teams create a strong sense of belonging for students and provide support to help them make a smooth transition from elementary to junior high school.

...we offer a rigorous academic program  across all academic levels with an emphasis on enhancing students'

critical thinking and problem-solving skills.  Challenge-level courses are available in the core subjects of English, science, math, and social studies.  These courses prepare students for advanced programs in high school.

...we are in  the process of implementing the International  Baccalaureate Middle Years Program IB (IB MYP).  The Middle Years Program requires students to participate in eight subject areas during the year.  We develop characteristics and traits that enable our students to analyze concepts locally and internationally.

...we offer AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) that is open to eligible and interested grade seven and eight  students.  The AVID  program serves to support those students who may be first generation college interested students and who need some support to take courses

at an advanced level.

... we offer the continuation of the Spanish Immersion program.  Students take all four content area classes in Spanish plus a Spanish Immersion Language course.

... as part of the school's IB MYP program requirement, students at Highland Park Junior High are enrolled in one of the three world language courses--Spanish,  Chinese or American Sign Langauge (ASL).

...we participate annually in the History Day competition, the District Spelling Bee, the model United Nations conference, Math Counts, and Geography Bee.

...we offer a full array of athletics and clubs available to all students.  Students have access to athletics and clubs offered at Highland Park Senior High that are not offered at the junior high.  We also offer After School Test Prep and Credit Recovery classes for qualifying students.
